Power Steering Noise on a European Car: What It Means and What to Check

A whine, groan, or clunk from the steering on a BMW, Mercedes, or Audi usually points to one of a few specific causes. Here's how to diagnose it before spending money.

Steering noise on a European car is worth diagnosing quickly โ€” not because it's always serious, but because the range of causes goes from a $12 top-off to a $900 rack replacement. Starting with the simple checks saves money.

Step 1: Identify the Sound

A whine that increases with steering input and engine RPM almost always points to the power steering pump or low fluid. A groan or moan when turning at slow speeds suggests air in the system or a failing pump. A clunk over bumps that also appears during cornering is a tie rod or ball joint, not the steering pump at all.

Hydraulic Systems: Start With Fluid

On cars with hydraulic power steering (most European models pre-2012), check the reservoir first. Low fluid level causes cavitation in the pump โ€” that characteristic whine. Fill to the correct level and retest. If the whine returns quickly, there's a leak: inspect the high-pressure hose, rack seals, and pump connections. If fluid stays full and the noise persists, the pump is degrading.

Electric Systems: Different Diagnosis

BMW shifted to EPS on the F30/F32 generation; Audi and Mercedes followed on most models by 2013. EPS steering noise is typically a groan or moan from the rack motor under load โ€” often made worse in cold weather. On BMW F-series cars, EPS rack replacement is one of the more common steering repairs. On Audi B8/B9, check for column bearing wear first (a much simpler fix).

When It's a Tie Rod, Not the Pump

A clunking or knocking sound specifically when turning at full lock or over rough surfaces is more likely tie rod ends or a failing steering rack bushing. These show up as play in the steering wheel and vague straight-line tracking, not as noise related to pump RPM. Inspect on a lift with the wheel turned to simulate the noise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a power steering whine mean the pump is failing?

Not necessarily. The most common cause of a power steering whine is simply low fluid level โ€” a $10 top-off that takes 5 minutes. Check the reservoir first. If fluid is full and the whine persists, the pump is the likely next suspect.

My car has electric power steering (EPS) โ€” can it still make noise?

Yes. EPS systems can develop motor noise, column bearing wear, or rack groaning. These are different diagnoses from hydraulic systems. A groaning that changes with wheel position on an EPS car is often a rack-and-pinion issue.
