Why More Repair Shops Are Turning to Pre-Owned OEM for European Jobs
New OEM prices on European parts are squeezing shop margins. Pre-owned OEM is the answer most shops haven't fully explored — here's why it works and what to look for.
October 25, 2026
The margin pressure on European repair shops has increased significantly over the past five years. New OEM pricing keeps climbing, and customers are increasingly price-conscious. Pre-owned OEM parts — sourced from inspected, documented-mileage donor vehicles — are how forward-thinking shops are closing that gap without sacrificing quality.
The Math Is Simple
A new OEM Mercedes ignition coil set for a V6 engine retails for $320–$450. The same set, pulled from a 35,000-mile accident vehicle, runs $90–$140. Both are genuine Mercedes-Benz parts. The difference goes directly to your margin or to the customer's bill — and in a competitive market, that difference closes jobs.
Where It Makes the Most Sense
Pre-owned OEM is particularly valuable for: electronic modules and control units, interior components (often impossible to source new at any reasonable price), suspension and chassis parts, complete assemblies (headlights, door mirrors, seat components), and platform-specific parts that have been discontinued or have very long new-order lead times.
What to Ask Your Supplier
Before using a pre-owned OEM source for shop work, establish: what mileage the part was pulled at, how they inspect before sale, what their return policy is, and whether they can provide the donor vehicle VIN on request. A supplier who can't answer those questions isn't one you should be staking your reputation on.
Disclosure and Customer Trust
Be upfront with customers. "This is an OEM part from a low-mileage donor vehicle — same part that was on your car from the factory" is a confident, honest explanation. Customers who understand it usually respect it. The shops that handle this well build loyalty around it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will customers push back on pre-owned parts?
Some will ask questions — which is fair. The answer is straightforward: pre-owned OEM from a documented-mileage donor vehicle is the exact same part as new, made to the same specification, with remaining service life. Many customers actually prefer it once they understand the sourcing.
What warranty should I expect on a pre-owned OEM part?
Reputable suppliers offer 30–90 day warranties on used OEM parts. For higher-value components (transmissions, engines, modules), look for at least 90 days. My Parts Outlet warranties every part we sell.
