VIN Decoding for European Cars: A Quick Reference for Shops

A VIN tells you exactly what's on the car — engine, transmission, equipment level, and production date. Here's how to read it for the platforms you work on most.

November 3, 2026

Getting the right part for a European car starts with the VIN. Not a year/make/model guess — the actual VIN. Here's how to decode it efficiently for the platforms you work on most.

Universal VIN Structure (Positions 1–11)

Position 1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier. BMW cars built in Germany start with WBA (sedan) or WBS (M). Mercedes-Benz starts with WDB or WDD. Audi starts with WAU. Land Rover starts with SAL. Position 10 is the model year code (a letter or number that maps to a specific year). Position 9 is a check digit you can ignore for parts lookup purposes.

BMW-Specific: Positions 4–8

BMW encodes the model line, body style, engine, and safety features in positions 4–8. Position 4 identifies the series (BA = 3 Series, BE = 5 Series, BF = 6 Series). Position 6 is the engine code. Combined with the production option list (PR codes on a glovebox sticker), you can confirm exactly which variant of the engine and transmission is installed.

Mercedes-Benz: Decoding with the Full VIN

Mercedes encodes the model designation (C-Class, E-Class, GLC) and body variant in positions 4–6. Positions 7–8 encode the engine and transmission type. For electronic parts especially, using the full 17-digit VIN in the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog) ensures you pull the correct part for the exact production week — Mercedes regularly revised component specs mid-model-year.

Audi/VW: The PR Code System

Audi uses a separate PR code system (printed in the service book or accessible via diagnostic software) that encodes every option fitted to the vehicle. For parts sourcing, decoding the VIN gives you the model; the PR codes give you the spec. Use the ETKA catalog with the full VIN for best results.

Quick Shortcut for Parts Lookups

For fast, accurate sourcing: text us the full 17-digit VIN and what you need. We cross-reference against our inventory and the correct OEM part number for that exact vehicle. It takes the guesswork out of a VIN decode entirely.

Need the Part?

Text us your VIN and what you need — we'll check our inventory of inspected pre-owned OEM parts for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Range Rover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every VIN decode the same way across manufacturers?

The first 11 characters follow a standardized global format. Positions 1–3 identify the manufacturer (World Manufacturer Identifier). Position 9 is a check digit. Position 10 is the model year. Positions 11+ are manufacturer-specific.

Can a VIN tell me what transmission a car has?

Yes — on BMW and Mercedes models, the VIN (or the vehicle's option codes, which are tied to the VIN) indicate the transmission type. BMW's production option list (often on a sticker inside the glovebox) lists every factory option including transmission.
